At Parsons School of Design, well before ever even knowing much about retouching, Maria Cristina Montiel worked in traditional media, such as drawing and illustration. MCM is now putting these works in her print on demand shop.

Liquid Mushrooms

This black and white digital illustration depicts a collection of mushrooms that appear to be in a state of metamorphosis. The mushrooms are rendered in a realistic style, with attention to detail on the texture of the caps and the stipes. The overall effect is one of a dreamlike or surreal landscape.

The title, “Liquid Mushrooms,” suggests that the mushrooms are undergoing a transformation from a negative form to a positive form. The negative form is represented by the solid, black mushrooms. The positive form is represented by the liquid, white mushrooms. This transformation can be interpreted as a metaphor for the creative process, or for the journey of self-discovery.

The design is a 4 x 10 panel grid of a 1×1″ graphic I drew in pencil, in which each step was morphed by hand then inked.

The image is striking and visually arresting. The use of black and white creates a sense of contrast and tension. The attention to detail creates a sense of wonder and mystery. The title, “Liquid Mushrooms,” is both evocative and intriguing.

MCM Self Portraits

In the realm of self-portraiture, my early works serve as a captivating exploration of self-discovery and the intricate tapestry of understanding my own identity. These pieces represent not just a visual representation of my physical form but a profound dive into the depths of my psyche. Each line and color choice is a reflection of the emotions, experiences, and aspirations that shaped me during those formative years.

With every self portrait, I aimed to peel back the layers of my own existence, revealing the complex interplay of light and shadow that defines the human spirit. Through these early self-portraits, I sought to capture the essence of youth, vulnerability, and the relentless quest for self-understanding.

Join me on this introspective journey through my early self-portrait works, where I invite you to witness the evolution of my artistic voice and the intimate dialogue between artist and subject. These pieces are not merely static snapshots of a moment in time but living, breathing expressions of my inner world.
